This college-preparatory course gives an overview of British Literature, covering seven periods: Old English, Medieval, Renaissance, Neoclassical, Romantic, Victorian, and Modern/Postmodern eras. Each unit will include full novel studies including Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, several of Shakespeare’s plays, Jane Eyre, and The Importance of Being Earnest. These will be supplemented with additional fiction and nonfiction selections.
Weekly assignments will help students develop proficiency in expressing ideas through writing, discussion, and presentation. Formal writing assignments include narratives, persuasive essays, compare/contrast essays, creative writing projects, and a final research paper. Students are expected to complete approximately three to four hours of home assignments each week, with age-appropriate reading and responses.
The goal of this course is for students to be well prepared for college-level reading, writing and critical thinking, and to develop an enjoyment and appreciation of literature. NOTE: This course has UC a-g approval from iLead, and meets all California standards, but is NOT eligible for charter funding, due to our Christian worldview.
