Course Description

In this class, students will become acquainted with both the Spanish language and culture through literature, music, art, puppets, movement and games.  Each year, we focus on a different theme.  For the 2020-21 school year, our theme will be "The City."  We will learn about different forms of transportation and about various community workers (occupations) in Spanish.  To develop vocabulary and conversational skills, we will role-play buying groceries in a store, ordering food in a restaurant, depositing and withdrawing money from the bank, shopping at the mall, working in a hospital and going to the movies, the theatre, the library, the zoo and the airport.  Students will have an hour of homework each week which will consist of a song to practice and simple activities to reinforce the vocabulary and skills they are learning in class.

Homework
Homework will be given but it is not mandatory to complete, but it is highly encouraged that each student do it to learn the language. It's like a music class. If you only play the piano once a week at your lesson with your teacher, but don't practice outside of class, you will never really learn to play the instrument well or master it. I will be providing incentives (prizes) for the children who bring in their completed assignments each week. The homework will take a maximum of one hour a week. It will consist of listening to and singing songs we've learned in class; playing some online games reinforcing new vocabulary; completing one or two activity pages in their workbooks; working on a project or doing a hands on activity. Note: the hour should be broken down into shorter work sessions. It will vary each week and with each household how that looks. I recommend listening to/singing the songs 4x a week (15 min total); then pick one day to do the online games (10 min); one day to do the activity page(s) (10-15 min); and another day to to the hands on activity or (10 min)
