Course Description

Grade Level: 1st-3rd

Prerequisite: ability to write, or parent can sit in and write for student if student cannot yet write on his/her own

Writing made fun! Your kids will love creating their very own books and stories in this class. This is a class for everyone, from the novice to the expert writer. If your child struggles with writing, this course will get them excited about writing, and by the end of it, they will have a new found confidence in writing multiple literary works- from narratives to poems and historical fiction.

This course is one year, but can be taken for one semester as well. We cover 3 writing projects per semester. Every year we will do different writing projects, so essentially your child can take this course every year and still learn something new. This course uses Here to Help Learning’s Paragraph Writing curriculum. It is a very interactive, hands-on video instruction where students are taken creatively through the writing process- brainstorming, making a list, webbing, 1st rough draft, 1st input, 2nd rough draft, 2nd input, final recopy, and publishing. Through this writing process, the student will learn to generate ideas for writing, to gather information, to organize information, to express their thoughts and ideas through writing, to give and receive input from others, to revise content after receiving input, to discover grammar and spelling errors, to present work with excellence, and to share their writing.

The instruction is not exclusively video based, but gets paused for long periods many times through the class to allow for games, writing warm-ups, class discussion, activities, and PIPing. PIP stands for praise-input-praise. After each draft, students will read their writing to the class and then we will go around the room taking turns giving a praise first, then an input or suggestion, and ending with another praise for each student. Each student learns to receive and give criticism and advice in a loving manner. They also will gain skills in public speaking. PIP is one of the most valuable things your student will learn through the course. It will transform your student into a confident, respectful, and analytical writer. I have seen kids grow dramatically in their character after using this approach.

This course is highly interactive and covers a lot in one hour while remaining creative and joyous. This curriculum is targeted at 1st to 3rd graders, but might be a good option for your 4th or 5th graders if they do not have writing experience and would like to take this course as a prerequisite for the Essay Writing course. This course is flexible and they can always write more than a single paragraph in it.

If you have questions or would like the scope & sequence, please reach out to the instructor. The cost of the course is $200 per semester, and cannot be paid using instructional funds as it is a Christian based curriculum. The cost of this course includes all the materials, student workbook, and fees. Your child will be given a divided binder to keep their writing warm ups and activities. All craft supplies and materials will be provided in class. At the end of the semester, your student will bring home a portfolio of their completed writing projects.
