Course Description

Pickleball Class:  Every student should be developing their motor skills, coordination, strength, conditioning, and learning sports skills.  It is required by the state now that students take PE all 12 years of school - all the way through high school!  Pickleball is a great sport for students to learn, practice, and play to develop all of these essential physical skills.  Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America, with tennis courts in many parks and country clubs being replaced by pickleball courts.  There are dedicated pickleball courts being built in many parks.  It is the best sport for your students to learn a paddle/racket sport.  It is much easier on the body than tennis, and students can learn the skills and concepts in a court sport at a much younger age with pickleball than with tennis.

Students will be broken down into small groups by age and skill level to work on individual skills, practice skills, and play games with others their age.  Every student has a paddle and a ball the whole class and is working on skills the whole class.  Students will develop coordination, athleticism, strength, and conditioning by working on the individual skills in pickleball and playing games each week in class.  We maximize the space available at our class site and have multiple courts set up so that students are hitting the ball the whole time.  Paddles and balls are provided for class but it is highly recommended that you get your student their own paddle and ball to practice with at home.  We will plan a tournament day at least once in the semester on a Saturday where students from all pickleball and PE classes can come to a park with multiple courts and play a tournament for more playing time in a new setting.

There is probably no other class that will impact your student for the rest of their life as much as PE.  Your children need to learn sports skills and physical conditioning while they are growing up whether they want to or not, because that will set the foundation for their physical fitness for the rest of their life!  Don't let your child decide whether they want to learn physical skills based on whether they "want to" or not.  We apply that thinking to competitive teams, but not to PE class.  We don't ask them if they want to learn subtraction, because we know it is a life skill they have to learn.  The same applies to their Physical Education.  They need to learn a wide variety of sports skills, do some conditioning and strength work, and learn to play cooperatively AND competitively with other students.  Most of the time, after kids learn some basic skills in a sport, they enjoy it.  They will grow in this class and have FUN!

Todd is a vendor with all charter schools, so the class can be paid for entirely with a charter school PO.  Check with your charter school for “California Athletics” and “Todd Nash”.  Have the PO issued for 1 lump sum for $260 in September, or if they prefer multiple POs, have POs issued for $130 in September, and $130 in November.  You can also pay for the class by check, $260 at or before the first class.  You can also check with Todd to see if he is a vendor with your school.  Email if you have any questions: CalAthletics@sbcglobal.net.

Homework
There is no academic homework for this class, but students will improve dramatically more if they have a paddle and ball at home to work on individual skills. Any practice time they can get will help them. If you want to use this to meet state standards for PE, students should practice 30 minutes a day for 4 other days during the week to meet the state standard for K-8, and a little more for grades 9-12.
Other Information
Todd is a vendor with ALL charter schools. Search for "California Athletics" and "Todd Nash". If you don't see Todd or California Athletics, email or call Todd and he will help you find him or wil get set up as a vendor with your charter.
