Course Description

God created the sciences of Chemistry and Physics to make everything around us operate as it does. Using the Apologia text, “Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics”, your student will embark on a year-long study of how God put the world together and made it work. Chemistry and Physics are the studies of matter and energy. Matter is “anything that takes up space” and energy is “what makes all matter work, move, and do things.” We will learn about volume, mass, density, buoyancy, the states of matter, atoms, chemical compounds, polymers, crystals, acids and bases, mixtures, the Laws of Motion, gravity, friction, adhesion and cohesion in the first semester. The second semester will cover the concepts of kinetic and potential energy, fossil fuels and renewable energy, sound, light, the Laws of Thermodynamics, combustion, electricity, circuits, magnetism, and simple machines. This vast array of scientific concepts will come to life through hands-on experiments and projects each week.

Please purchase the textbook (ISBN #978-1-935495-98-7) and only one copy per family is needed. DO NOT purchase the accompanying Apologia Notebooking Journal since I write my own version of the student lab notebook and it will be provided as part of the materials fee for the course. This also gives you work samples should you need them for your PSP or charter. This class does not accept charter funds due to the Christian content but the majority of work samples can be submitted to a charter for science samples. This is a comprehensive full science course for the year. Upon registration, a $50 non-refundable deposit will be due, which is applied to the cost of the course.

A detailed syllabus will be provided so you can discover exactly what is accomplished in class each week, as well as the weekly expectations for homework. Typical weekly homework is 8-10 pages of reading (done independently) and 2 pages in the student notebook. It should not take more than 1 hour per week to complete both the reading assignment and notebook pages. Once a month there will be an in-class vocabulary quiz so additional study time will be required for the quiz. These Chemistry and Physics topics are very abstract to most students, especially when learning them for the first time, so completing the homework reading and questions each week is critical to your student grasping these concepts.
